‘Gravity’ ready for revenge in ONE 55
by Harley F. Palangchao

Filipino MMA fighter Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio will be the lone Igorot warrior to see action in the ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes in Singapore on May 26.

Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao confirmed to reporters last week that Eustaquio will have a rematch with Anatpong Bunrad of Thailand in the flyweight division.

The older Thai fighter narrowly eclipsed Eustaquio via split decision in the flyweight match in ONE Championship 26: Valor of Champions on April 24, 2015.

It was an upset loss for Eustaquio as the event was held in Manila and thousands of Filipino fans were expecting him to win the bout.

That fight, Eustaquio played the role of aggressor for most of the bout, while Bunrad opted to lay back and counter.

Eustaquio, known for his well-rounded striking game, dictated the pace with his boxing and wushu. Both fighters had their moments in close exchanges but Bunrad scored on a pair of takedowns, including one in the final round that sealed the deal.

This time, the Igorot fighter is not taking any chance but to make sure he will stand victorious during fight night in Singapore.

The 28-year-old Eustaquio holds a better pro MMA record of eight wins and five losses against Bunrad’s five wins and two losses.

Both fighters moving up to the bantamweight division, Eustaquio scored a two-game winning streak against Saiful Merican and Gianni Subba to become a contender for the ONE bantamweight world belt.

But the road to a title shot was stopped by Toni Tauru, who submitted him via rear naked choke in their encounter in December 2016. Team Lakay’s top bantamweight fighter Kevin Belingon in Manila defeated Tauru last month.

Bunrad has been idle for more than a year after losing to Gianni Subba in December 2015.

ONE: Dynasty of Heroes will feature reigning atomweight champion Angela Lee who will defend her belt against Istela Nuñez.

The co-main event will see reigning welterweight champion Ben Askren defending his title against Agilan Thani.
