Five Cordillera fighters set for World Muay Thai tourney

Homegrown muay thai athletes are in South Korea for the 1st Jincheon World Youth Martial Arts Masterships from Nov. 3 to 7 in Jincheon County, Chungcheongbuk-do Province.

Coach Bryan Olod of Kafagway MMA and Muay Thai Association of the Philippines-Baguio said the local athletes are with other Filipino athletes representing the Philippine Junior Muay Thai Team in South Korea to participate in the five-day event.

Athletes participating in the event are young martial artists Islay Erika Bomogao, Liane Benito, Rosemarie Recto, Felix Dave Cantores, and Mariah Co.

Benito, Recto, and Cantores are studying at Sablan National High School and under Kafagway MMA while Bomogao is studying at that Benguet State University-Secondary Laboratory School and trains under Team Lakay.

 Co is student at Philippine Science High School at Irisan and trains in Tribal-Torogi gym.

Earlier, Benito won a silver medal in the 14 to 15 years old category while Co shone in the 12 to 13 years old category of the World Youth Muay Thai Championship in Bangkok, Thailand staged in Aug.

Together with them are fellow Baguio Coach and Chair of MAP Baguio Joseph Oloan and technical official from Baguio Edzel Ngina, also an international referee and judge under International Federation of Muaythai Amateur and national coach.

The SoKor event, with cultural programs and competitions, is the first of its kind in Korea with around 600 people from 30 countries participating.

With the theme, “A global festival for young martial artists,” the competition features six martial arts disciplines including Kurash (Uzbekistan martial art), Hapkido and Yongmudo (Korean martial arts), Muaythai (Thailand), and special events called the Martial arts show and the record contest of high and long jump kick and fall.

The event is hosted by Jincheon World Youth Martial Arts Masterships and backed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea. It is also in partnership with the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation, Korean Sport and Olympic Committee and the Korean National Commission for Unesco and Unesco-ICM.
