Gabutan knocks out foe in Highland Brawl event
by Harley F. Palangchao

HE’S BACK -- Former WBO Oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan of Besao, Mountain Province easily demolished Roilo Golez in the main event of the Highland Brawl 2 for a second round TKO at the La Trinidad Municipal Gym on weekend. -- Harley Palangchao

Besao, Mountain Province pride Dayer Gabutan scored an upset revenge from last year’s loss by winning via technical knockout against Roilo Golez in the main event of the Highland Brawl 2 last week.

The former World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight champion landed a solid hook that dropped Golez to the canvass late in the second round and his opponent failed to beat the count from referee Virgilio Garcia.

The 29-year-old Gabutan who was not seen inside the ring for more than a year smelled blood early in the second round when he scored the first knockdown by landing a straight against Golez.

Gabutan has connected some crisp job and combination while on tight guard from the effective counter punches of Golez.

It was a sweet revenge for Gabutan who suffered a knockout loss from Golez, the former World Boxing Council Asian Boxing minimum weight champion, during their first encounter in Mandaluyong in June 2016.

Since then, Gabutan has concentrated with his studies while busy with his married life. He and his lovely wife had their first baby months ago.

Highland Boxing Gym manager Brico Santig said Gabutan has a great potential to see action in regional (Asia-Pacific) title fight later this year.

Gabutan improved his record to 19 wins, including 10 KOs/TKOs against six losses while Golez dropped to 16-19-1.

In the co-main event, Ifugao prospect KJ Natuplag remains undefeated after scoring a first round TKO of Bener Santig in their scheduled eight-round bout.

The 20-year-old featherweight boxer also scored an early knockdown before finishing the fight before the end of the opening round. He improved his record to five wins while Santig now has five wins, two losses and one draw.

Freddie Gomera (2-1-1) won via majority draw against Marlon Balacando (0-0-2) while Jameson Lingbanan was successful in his professional debut via third round TKO of rookie Jones Montes.

The event is backed by Benguet Gov. Crescencio Pacalso, La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda, and Mary Jane Gacad and the Philippine Military Academy.
