Baguio, Benguet Palaro bid dashed
by Ofelia C. Empian

The coolest Palarong Pamabansa would have to wait as Baguio City and Benguet Province lost their bid to host the event over Vigan City, Ilocos Sur that was officially chosen as host for 2018.

The decision was announced on Sept. 27 where the various bidders including Baguio and Benguet, Vigan, Bulacan, Marikina and Isabela gave their final presentations to the Palarong Pambansa Board of the Department of Education.

Part of the presentation includes the playing venues, billeting areas and traffic situation.

Earlier, the local government units of Baguio and Benguet and Vigan, Ilocos Sur were the top contenders for the hosting of the 2018 national games.

“We cannot do anything, it was the choice of the panel. At least we did what we can do to convince them,” said La Trinidad Mayor Romeo Salda, who joined Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Benguet Gov. Crescensio Pacalso during the final presentation in Manila on Wednesday.

Department of Education-Cordillera Information Officer Georaloy Palao-ay said it was disheartening to learn of the result of the evaluation.

“We garnered the most points in terms of readiness of facilities and billeting centers, we got the commitment of our stakeholders, and we have the best climate conducive for athletes,” Palao-ay said.

“It could have been a golden opportunity for our young athletes to compete in a whole new different playing field,” he said.

However, he acknowledged that it was a close fight between the two LGUs and it was a tough decision for the Palarong Pambansa Board.

“Of course (it is) frustrating but I am not surprised at all,” City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said.

The national selection board is chaired by the DepEd Secretary and co-chaired by the chair of the Philippine Sports Commission with the Education undersecretaries and regional directors as members.

Despite this, Palao-ay said it was refreshing to see the unity of the various local government units and agencies during the planning process for the Palarong Pambansa hosting bid. He said the DepEd-CAR is thankful for the support shown by the LGUs and agencies during preparations and presentation.

He said they would have to invest now on the local athletes to be more competitive in the upcoming national games.

Absence of traffic jam in the province and the acknowledgement of the Vigan City Police Station as the best city police station nationwide were said to have greatly helped Vigan win the bid.
