by Ofelia C. Empian

Local ultra trail runner Arnold Lozano made it to the top five of the recently slated Vietnam Mountain Marathon on Sept. 23 at the Topas Ecolodge, Sapa, North West Vietnam.

Lozano edged out trail runners from other countries by finishing the 100-kilometer race on fifth place with 16 hours, 11 minutes, and 31 seconds.

The homegrown dual-sport athlete, who is also a mountain biker, recently topped the King of the Mountain series in the Pulag 100-kilometer event with a course record of 17 hours, 35 minutes, and 23 seconds in May this year.

Topping the competition is Vietnam local Quang Tran clocking in at 13 hours, 17 minutes, and 45 seconds.

Tran outpaced Asia Trail Master champion Manolita Divina of the Philippines who settled for second place with a time of 14 hours, 33 minutes and 46 seconds.

Another Vietnamese, Ngoc Ha Cao, finished the race in 15 hours, 44 minutes and 49 seconds for third place and Singaporean Chua Ying Zhi with 15 hours, 47 minutes and 40 seconds for fourth place.

In the distaff side, Australian Kim Matthews topped the division with 17 hours, 52 minutes and 23 seconds; fellow Australian Hoa Banh with 19 hours, 35 minutes and 24 seconds; and third placer Nguyen Thi Durong from Vietnam with a time of 20:15:56.

VMM is Vietnam’s hardest trail running route which features 10 km, 21 km, 42 km, 70 km and 100 km in the breathtaking mountain region of North Vietnam.

VMM is a point-earning race and official qualifying race of the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc or UTMB event, considered as the Mecca of all trail-running events worldwide.

In the recently slated UTMB, homegrown athletes Sandi Menchi Abahan and PO3 Miguel Carranza successfully finished their respective races in the UTMB 2017 inspiring other local runners to aim for the international running event.
