Baguio and Benguet ready to host Batang Pinoy 2018
by Ofelia C. Empian

Baguio and Benguet are ready for this year’s staging of the Batang Pinoy 2018 set from Sept. 15 to 21.

Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan, Benguet Gov. Crescencio Pacalso, Philippine Sports Commissioner Celia Kiram, and the Department of Education-Baguio Division among other stakeholders signed a memorandum of agreement formalizing the hosting of the two localities.

Kiram said they considered the two local government units as co-hosts of the Batang Pinoy due to their sports facilities, adding that PSC and its partners have deliberated on the readiness of the two LGUs due to their initial preparations when they vied for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa, which was eventually won by Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

“We have seen your preparations for the Palarong Pambansa, para hindi masayang ang inyong paghahanda,” Kiram said.

She said 7,000 individuals composed of athletes, coaches and other delegates will troop to Baguio and Benguet for the competition.

DepEd Baguio Schools Division Superintendent Frederico Martin said classes in public schools in Baguio will be suspended during the event to pave way for the competitions.

He said the schools will soon replace the classes with Saturday classes.

“But not consecutive Saturdays, at least two Saturdays in a month,” Martin said.

Venues in the city are the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Building for arnis; Athletic Bowl for athletics and beach volleyball; Cooyesan Sports Plaza for badminton; People’s Park or Baguio City High School gym for boxing; Beneco multipurpose hall for chess; Philippine Military Academy for cycling and triathlon/duathlon; University of Baguio for dance sport and taekwondo; Saint Louis University for futsal, and BCHS auditorium for gymnastics.

Other facilities include the Baguio Tennis Club for lawn tennis, SM Baguio for karatedo, St. Vincent gym for sepak takraw, Baguio swimming pool for swimming, CAP building for table tennis; Engineer’s Hill covered court for Muay Thai; FVR gymnasium for wushu; YMCA for weightlifting; SLU Burgos Gym for boys basketball; Easter College for girls basketball; Recolletos Gym for indoor volleyball boys; and University of the Cordilleras for indoor volleyball girls.

The playing venues in Benguet are the Benguet State University football field for archery; Benguet Sports Center for baseball and softball; BSU covered court for judo; BSU closed gym for pencak silat, and Cordillera Career Development College for wrestling.

Domogan is positive that the city’s athletes will once again sustain their winning momentum for the annual national sports event that aims to train young athletes to become world-class sports men and women.
