PODIUM FINISHERS -- Rising multisports athletes from the Cordillera led by national duathlete Jarwyn Banatao of Mountain Province (left), Maenard Pecson of Benguet, Ibaloy national team triathlete Josh Ramos, Eliz Von Quintela and Erica Bulatao of Baguio were podium finishers in the recently held Pilipinas Duathlon in Clark, Pampanga. -- Rick Bulatao

Local multisport athletes finished strong in the final leg of Pilipinas Duathlon series on Aug. 26 in Clark, Pampanga.

Joshua Ramos, the first Ibaloy to become part of the national triathlon team, together with Maenard Pecson and Erica Bulatao, competed in the sprint division where they ran four kilometers then biked 18 kilometers and ran another four kilometers to finish the race.

Ramos crossed the finish line with the second fastest over all time of 1:07:25 while Pecson topped the 20-24 age group with a time of 1:12: 55 with Bulatao finishing second in the 15-19 age female category with a time of 1:19:55 and placed eight overall.

In the longer distance, another homegrown athlete, 18-year-old mountain biker Eliz Von Quintela, shone as he debuted in the standard distance where he ran eight km, biked 35 km and ran another four km to the finish line and place second in his age category with a time of 01:49:24. Quintela round up the top 10 overall where he even outran some of the elite athletes.

Benguet’s duathlon athlete Jerwyn Banatao, who traces his roots to Mountain Province and a member of the national duathlon team, finished third in the elite category.

“Our athletes prepared well for the race on the winding uphill bike routes of the province and using the rolling terrain as their run playground,” said Jet Ramos, one of the pioneering multisport athletes in the Cordillera.

The youth grassroots program for multisport is the project of Team Baguio-Benguet Triathlon team captain J. Ramos and his wife Lou Ann. Their love for the sport inspired them to spread the interest to the youth starting with their own children and eventually sharing it with the community. Their aim is to develop athletes starting from the basic level to also hopefully becoming part of the national team.

The Ramoses often spend their training time with these young athletes, as the couple said they do not have much to give in terms of monetary benefits or free training equipment, but ensure they give enough time to these kids hoping this investment will help the athletes realize their purpose in life and their future through the sport.

They are grateful for private individuals and the office of the Benguet Rep. Ronald Cosalan, who support their cause.

The Baguio-Benguet Triathlon Team is continuously looking for young talents in the Cordillera.

The youth were also joined by age groupers from Baguio including L. Ramos as champion in the 35-39 group, Raegan Nabua champion in the30-35 group, Doddie Dino, second place in age 55-59 group and retired police colonel Brigilio Balaba, who topped the 70 and above group. Also finishing the race strong was Xy James Dacayanan.
