Banario confident of six straight wins

WINNING STREAK -- Team Lakay’s Honorio Banario (left) is gunning for his six straight win in the lightweight division of ONE Championship when he faces title contender Amir Khan in the co-main event of ONE” Beyond the Horizon in Shanghai, China on Sept. 8. -- ONE photo

Team  Lakay’s Honorio “The Rock” Banario will continue to make his presence felt in the ONE’s lightweight division especially when he nails his six straight victory in Shanghai, China on Sept. 8.

The former ONE featherweight world champion went on a five-bout skid between 2013 and 2015, and was on the verge of retirement when he decided to take a step away from competition to regain his bearings.

Coming back to the cage as a lightweight a year after, Banario looked like a new man.

“With the help of my teammates and the support of my friends and my family, I continued with my career and it was a good decision.”

Now, the 28-year-old Banario is on an unprecedented five-bout win streak, defeating a handful of solid opponents, among those are Eddie Ng, JaroslavJartim, and top lightweight Adrian Pang.

With momentum on his side, Banario is closer to a shot at the ONE lightweight world championship held currently by Martin Nguyen, who clinched the title from Eduard Folayang.

Banario is set to return to action at ONE: Beyond the Horizon and he will face top lightweight Amir Khan of Singapore in a battle with serious title implications.

Khan, a former Muay Thai champion, is coming off a solid technical knockout victory over Korean Sung Jong Lee. He is known as a dangerous striker, capable of finishing contests quickly and efficiently behind his Muay Thai experience.

For Banario, training with Folayang has been one of his treasured moments coming back to the winning circle.

A huge factor in Banario’s re-emergence as an elite competitor is his time spent with his Team Lakay mentor, a man whom he considers a family member.

Banario and Folayang have been each other’s main sparring partner for the greater part of their careers. They helped each other become among the promotion’s top talents.

For Banario, having Folayang in his corner, helping him throughout his career has been a blessing. When “The Rock” hit rock bottom in his career as a professional martial artist, he found solace in Folayang’s encouraging words, telling him to constantly push through no matter the adversity.

Having a sparring partner to consistently test his mettle, Banario said, is one of his greatest blessings as a martial artist. Being able to count on Folayang giving him a rough workout kept Banario evolving as a competitor, which is displayed each time he stepped into the cage.
