Cardinals lead men’s BBEAL basketball
by Ofelia C. Empian

Defending champions University of Baguio Cardinals trumped the Cordillera Career Development College Admirals, 81-71, at the latter’s homecourt, Nov. 5, to retain the top spot in the men’s basketball of the 33rd Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League.

The highly electrifying semifinals brought the Cardinals to their eighth straight victory to enter the finals slot, led by newcomer Bheniedick Lozano with 21 points, nine of which were from the arc.

First quarter saw both teams going head-to-head, tied at 14 points, but by the second quarter, the Cardinals stepped up their game with the first half ending 40-33.

Claude Leymark Camit led the charge for the Cardinals during the first half with 19 points while Efren Dela Cruz and Vince Ahron Sibbaluca had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Admirals came thundering by the third quarter with the energy of Jamil Remiendo, scoring five points towards the end of the canto, giving a total of 12 points for the quarter.

Bran Graviles then banked a two-pointer to extend the Admirals’ lead to five at the close of the third quarter, 55-60.

Remiendo contributed a total of 19 points while Graviles gave 12 points for the team and Neil Ralp Ulep contributed 17 points for this year’s host Admirals.

But this only furthered the resolve of  the Cardinals, who took over the ball with Lozano tying the game at 62 early in the pay off period,  and  outscored the Admirals in the fourth quarter, 26 to 11, capped by a slam dunk from Sibbaluca in the waning seconds of the ball game.

Meanwhile, the game between Admirals and Baguio College of Technology Atoms will determine who will advance to the next step and will take on second seeded University of the Cordilleras Jaguars, which have a twice to beat edge.
