PSC conducts ‘women in sports’ footrace today

by Jogin Tamayo

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) through the City Administrators Office announced the kick-off of a special footrace today, June 29, in line with the Luzon leg of the “Women in Sports” program of president Gloria Macapagal – Arroyo.

The starting gun will be fired promptly at 6:00 am today along Lakedrive in Burnham Park.

Interested participants may still register early for the 3K, 5K and 10K races at the Igorot Stage of Melvin Jones before the 6:00 am starting gun.

“The event is a fitting conclusion to the campus tour encouraging women to be active in sports which was successfully concluded at the University of Baguio FGB Hall last Wednesday, June 25. Boxing and muaythai were conducted on June 26 boxing at the Malcolm Square while wushu and muay exhibitions were staged by female fighters at the SM City Baguio last June 27.

PSC commissioner for sectoral sports Jose Mundo in a faxed message said “...the activity in line with the gender equity program of [the president].”

He said, “the president saw it fit to make women’s advocacy no longer confined during the women’s month celebration in March but a yearlong empowerment advocacy.”

Mayor Reinaldo Bautista, Jr. for his part welcomed the countrywide sports development program saying that “...the activity surely puts an end to stereotypes — it goes to show that indeed, they are equally capable as their male counterparts.”

The event is made possible with the combined efforts and resources of the PSC, the City Government of Baguio, Milo, STI, Enchanted Kingdom, Gold’s Gym, Centrum, Superferry, Everlast, Air Philippines, Splash Island, Bio-Femme, and Absolute water.
