Lighting up and enlivening Baguio

December marks the unveiling, opening and ushering in of many Christmas offerings, events and activities in Baguio. The annual Silahis ng Pasko, conceptualized and popularized by manong Nars Padilla usually starts on Dec. 1.

As of this writing, scheduled for unveiling is the Christmas tree at the Rose Garden; the lighting of the artistic layered tinatik tents of artist Maela Jose at the top of Session, simulating an artistic Christmas tree with hand painted symbols of the Cordillera.

An anticipated event will be the opening of the lighted Malcolm Square with its Christmas atmosphere. And of course, much awaited is the Saint Louis University Christmas Lantern Parade, which has grown more spectacular through the years and now commands its own audience. Baguio’s roads, Session, Harrison and Magsaysay will also be lighted, making Baguio, a little Ayala Boulevard in Makati of sorts. Happy Baguio!

Night tours will now be more exciting congratulations Baguio! The spirit of Christmas is in the air!

The Baguio Museum will also open the Makulay na Buhay Tinatik art exhibit of Maela Jose on Dec. 8 celebrating her 25 years as a tinatik artist. Also being lined up is a cantata to be announced on a later date.

Of course, there will be Christmas cantatas everywhere. The University of Baguio Christmas cantata will be on Dec. 5, 7 and 8 at the UB gymnasium. The Cantata starts at 5 p.m. For those interested, call UB Student Affairs. Do not miss this event.

Bing Bangaoet mentions that for the United Church of Christ in the Philippines Baguio, the schedules of the Christmas cantatas will be during the services on Dec. 10 and 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the UCCP Church. No tickets required.

The Silahis ng Pasko Choir opened the Silahis ng Pasko activities at the Melvin Jones Grandstand. Thank you Ernesto Datuin for posting.

A musical festival was staged at the Baguio Convention Center grounds with a guest DJ from Germany according to RJ Lu.

Happy 80th birthday to former mayor and congressman Bernardo “Bernie” Vergara Sr. tomorrow Dec. 4. Apo Bernie will celebrate his birthday at the Cordillera Convention Hall of the Baguio Country Club with the Great Gatsby attire.
