Four barangays have been chosen as recipients of a materials recovery facility (MRF) amounting to P600,000 each.
General Services Officer Eugene Buyucan said the recipient barangays are Gibraltar, Irisan, Bakakeng Central, and Guisad, which the Environmental Management Board-Cordillera chose in coordination with the GSO.
The project, amounting to P2.4 million, is funded by the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera and is undergoing bidding procedures.
Buyucan said the MRF measures 34 to 40 square meters and designed by personnel of the City Buildings and Architecture Office.
An MRF is a solid waste management facility that processes recyclable materials sold to manufacturers or other users.
Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of the Philippines mandates the establishment of a MRF in every barangay or cluster of barangays subject to guidelines and criteria pursuant to the law.
Buyucan said the provision of MR Fs to the four barangays is also in line with achieving one of the city’s 16-point strategic goal, which is revitalizing the environment.
A common MRF was earlier made operational for barangays Lualhati, Gibraltar, Pacdal, and Mines View and was initially managed by ornamental vendors under the supervision of a designated barangay official. – Gaby B. Keith
