The Special Citation Award is given to exemplary achievement and contribution to Philippine Cinema announced Tirso Cruz III, former chairperson of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

The 72nd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts & Sciences. Inc (Famas) 2024 Special Citation Award went to Pilar Padilla Brooks, who is the oldest living artist of Philippine cinema (LVN and Premier Production) at 97 years old and the oldest of the three living siblings of the first generation Padilla clan from Plaridel, Bulacan.

The other two are Nene and Naning. They are children of former Bulacan Governor Jose Galvez Padilla, who served from 1928 to 1931 and 1934 to 1937.

Other Special Citation Awards were given to Greg Martin and Gloria Romero.

Pilar starred and appeared in “Ang Magmamani” in 1938;  Victory Joe in 1946; Dalawang Daigdig in 1946; Bakya mo Neneng in 1947; Miss Philippines in 1947; Ang Bagong Sinderella in 1947; Caprichosa in 1947; Pangarap ko ay ikaw rin in 1947; Apat na Dalangin in 1948; Lumang Simbahan in 1949; and Dasalang Ginto in 1949 before she decided to retire  after the war.

Her first role in black and white films was  in ‘Victory Joe,’  then Dalawang Daigdig by LVN Pictures directed by a relative Gregorio Fernandez (father of Rudy Fernandez),  Bakya mo Neneng and Bagong Sinderella of Premiere Productions both directed by eldest sister Consuelo “Ateng” Padilla Osorio. Caprichosa was next also produced by Premiere Productions and directed by Ramon Estella.

She was also with the Nolasco brothers and the independent Filcudoma Pictures who filmed in Baguio.

She became an endorser of Gloco Hollywood products and worked with three big film companies: LVN pictures, Premiere Productions and the Nolasco Brothers.  Her versatility was displayed in “contrabida’ roles.

Her contemporaries were Anita Linda, Rosa Rosal, and Baguio residents Mila del Sol, and Lilia Dizon. . She is the “kumare” of Rosal, godmother to her eldest daughter Bobbie who studied in Brent School as a child. Her other children are George, Grey, Laraine, and Jack.

Pilar stayed in Baguio for five years from 1958 to 1963 where son Grey was born. Her husband, Oren, worked with the U.S. military. 

Her siblings include Estrella “Telly” Padilla who was then married to lawyer Adolfo Scheerer (one of the sons of Baguio Caucasian pioneer Otto Scheerer), Emma Teresa, and Antonio.

The prestigious Famas Award stated in 1952 and is equivalent to the Oscars. The statuette of the Maria Clara Award was modernized after glamorous Rosa Rosal as model to symbolize ‘the best of the best,” according to writer Renz Spangler.

The 2024 Famas Awardsis headed by president and chairman of the Board Francia Camacho Conrado.

Winners of the 2024 Famas Awards are Best Actress: Katherine Bernardo for A Very Good Girl; Best Actors: Piolo Pascual for Mallari and Alfred Vargas for Pieta.

Best Picture: Mallari; Best Director: Louie Ignacio for Papa Mascot; Circle of Excellence awardees: Vilma Santos, Christopher De Leon and Nora Aunor; Iconic Movie Actress awardees of Philippine Cinema: Snooky Serna, Nova Villa, Marissa Delgado, Pilar Pilapil, Divine Valencia, and Barbara Perez; Iconic Movie Actor of Philippine Cinema awardees: Coco Martin, Robin Padilla, Bong Revilla, LitoLapid, Roger Calvin, Pepito Rodriguez, Eddie Gutierrez, and Dante Rivero;

Bida ng Takilya awardees are: Dingdong Dantes and Marian Rivera for Rewind; Best Supporting Actress: Gloria Diaz for Mallari; Best Supporting Actor: LA Santos for In His Mother’s Eyes; Best Child Actor: Euwenn Mikael for Firefly; Best Child Actress: Elia Ilano for Ghost Tales; Dr. Jose Perez Memorial Award: Elwood Perez; Angelo “Eloy” Padua Memorial Award for Journalism: Baby K. Jimenez; Famas Presidential Award: Gina De Venecia; and Pempe Rodrigo, Golden Artist Award: John Lloyd Cruz.

German Moreno Youth Achievement Award: Joaquin Domagoso; Best Documentary: Maria; Best Short Film: Huling Sayaw ni Erlinda; Best Screenplay: Mallari; Best Cinematography: Gomburza;
