Baguio City expects hordes of tourists for the Holy Week break.
City Tourism Officer Aloysius Mapalo said as of April 7, the city has more than 80,000 approved travel registrations from April 8 to 17 and the number is expected to still increase in the coming days.
“Registrations usually increase sharply as the day of travel nears so figures for Holy Week may still double. Noticeably, April 14, a Holy Thursday, has the biggest registrations at 19,342 so far, but may increase up to 40,000 until the day before,” Mapalo said.
He said the city has not re-imposed a cap on the number of travelers allowed but Mayor Benjamin Magalong made it a point that measures remain in place to ensure health and safety protocols are imposed and observed by the establishment owners, tourists and residents.
The Baguio City Police Office has mounted the Oplan Summer Vacation to maintain peace and order and partnered with volunteer groups to provide motorist and road safety assistance for the whole duration.
Approved travel registration figures as of April 7 are: April 8 – 14,491; April 9 – 15,934; April 10 – 5,329; April 11 – 3,515; April 12 – 3,142; April 13 – 7,998; April 14 – 19,342; April 15 – 5,393; April 16 – 3,941; and April 17 – 1,379. – Aileen P. Refuerzo
