The newly established Benguet Provincial Science, Technology, and Innovation Coordinating Committee (PSTICC) and the Provincial Task Force for Science and Technology convened on June 25 to finalize the Benguet STI Plan 2023-2028.

Department of Science and Technology-CAR Director Nancy Bantog outlined the purpose of the STI Plan as a unified road map for Benguet. It aims to facilitate stakeholder engagement in implementing STI interventions based on provincial, national, and international frameworks.

These interventions will be designed to meet the province’s diverse needs across all sectors, ultimately guiding Benguet towards becoming a smart and sustainable community.

Gov. Melchor D. Diclas, in his message delivered by OIC Provincial Administrator Brian Camhit, emphasized the importance of collaboration.

He stressed the significance of leveraging the knowledge and expertise of all stakeholders to tailor the STI plan to Benguet’s requirements, addressing sectoral challenges and paving the way for transformative developments that will shape the province’s future.

The STI plan is a product of a series of workshops participated by representatives from line agencies, local government units, higher education institutions, and private stakeholders in Benguet.

The PSTICC and PLGU task force agreed to adopt the plan, but members of the two bodies are encouraged to still input comments, suggestions or additional data until July 19.

The multi-year STI plan will be presented in the next Provincial Development Council meeting.

The PSTICC was created to ensure the smooth flow of implementation of the program “Innovation, Science, and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-based Development, as well as other STI and research and development initiatives in the province.

It is chaired by the governor, with Dr. Shiela Marie Singa-Claver of DOST-PSTO Benguet as co-chair, and Joel B. Tingbàoen Jr., chair of the sangguniang panlalawigan committee on public utilities, transportation, communication, science and technology, as vice-chair. – Maria Aprila Cruz
