It would be much easier for public utility jeepney operators to get special permits for the duration of the modified general community quarantine towards the new normal if they form cooperatives, according to the Land Transportation and Franchising and Regulatory Board.

LTFRB-Cordillera Officer-in-Charge Lalaine Sobremonte said during the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force meeting her office will prioritize granting special permits to PUJs that have consolidated.

The LTFRB has requested the municipal planning development officers to meet with their respective transport groups and help them organize themselves.

Sobremonte said the deadline for consolidation for PUJs is supposedly by the end of the month but it might be extended.

Benguet Board Member Juan Nazarro Jr., chair of the committee on public utilities and transportation, suggested that more units should be given special permits which will operate by schedule or rotation to give jeeps with franchise the chance to ply the streets.

He added the LGUs would also be the ones to help in organizing the transport groups and schedule them for registration. – Ofelia C. Empian
