The local government of Besao, Mountain Province is preparing for the operationalization of the engineered sanitary landfill established at Barangay Kin-iway by 2023.
Mayor Bryne Bacwaden said they are awaiting the machine to be donated by the Environment Management Bureau-Cordillera.
The mayor said the EMB-Cordillera inspected the landfill in October that started construction in 2019 following the approval of the 10-year solid waste management plan of the municipality.
“They are very appreciative because a fifth class municipality with minimum resources is investing, prioritizing the construction of a sanitary landfill. They are telling us that our sanitary landfill is recommendable and above the standard of EMB-Cordillera,” Bacwaden said.
In preparation for its full operation, Bacwaden said they are already practicing solid waste management in town aside from using the materials recovery facilities in the barangays.
Bacwaden appealed to the residents to cooperate and help in this endeavor which is also for the future generations.
He said garbage is not only the concern of the local government, but should also be a problem of the people and an efficient solid waste management will not only benefit the local government, but also the people.
The LGU has allotted P800,000 under its 2023 budget for some repairs to be undertaken in the facility. – Debbie E. Gasingan
