BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) in partnership with the Bontoc Municipal Fire Station have intensified the education and communications campaign on basic disaster risk reduction and management, and fire prevention and safety through lectures.  

Personnel from the MDRRMO and Municipal Fire Station are going around the barangays of Bontoc to cater to the vulnerable sectors of the community, such as pregnant women and persons with disability or with special needs.

The activity aims to educate the vulnerable group on basic DRRM concepts particularly on their role in prevention and mitigation, preparedness and response, and as well as fire prevention and safety. 

The lectures, which started on June 1 until June 30 include basic concepts of the DRRM focusing on the activities in each thematic areas such as prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation and recovery.

The roles of vulnerable groups were also emphasized during the discussion. The importance of a family evacuation plan and preparation of go bags in each family are also given emphasis. 

On fire matters, the basic classifications of fire, countermeasures in cases of fire emergencies are discussed together with a demonstration on different response mechanisms during fire and earthquake emergencies. 

Barangay officials, midwives deployed at rural health units, and barangay health workers assisted the MDRRMO and the Municipal Fire Station. 

The activity is part of preparations for the observance of the National Disaster Resilience Month in July. – Meilynne Shalom A. Ayan
