The city has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, Sept. 25, for the provision of free public Wi-Fi and establish the Baguio City broadband network.
Signed at the Baguio Convention Center, Mayor Benjamin Magalong represented the local government while the DICT by Sec. Gregorio Honasan.
By next week, the city government will start constructing its Smart City System, the first in the country, Magalong said.
The broadband project will serve as the system’s robust infrastructure platform and make sure that it will not become a “white elephant,” he said.  
A Smart city is generally described as one that uses technology to provide services for its constituents and solve its problems.
Honasan expressed the DICT’s full support and commitment to the project which he says will provide long-term information connectivity for residents and aid the city in achieving e-governance.
Secretary to the Mayor Felipe Puzon, Jr. said the network will help residents cope with the new normal especially in the fields of education and business. Top city officials witnessed the signing. – Gaby Keith
