The city council has approved Ordinance 49, s. 2022, which grants authority for the release of P500,000 financial assistance to Banaue, Ifugao which was recently hit by flashfloods and mudslides.

Flashfloods and massive mudslides brought by the southwest monsoon experienced last July 7 have caused loss of properties, housing, agricultural crops, support facilities, and infrastructure. A total of 1,052 families from nine barangays were affected with about 1,047 families losing their dwellings.

The ordinance provided it is the city government’s practice of extending financial assistance to cities and municipalities or provinces struck by natural or man-made calamities.

The city council, through Resolution 290, s. 2022, has commended Adonis V. Togana for his timeless efforts of volunteerism of teaching Mathematics to students during the pandemic through online and limited face-to-face classes.

The resolution noted Togana’s fervent passion to share with learners his vast knowledge on Math that during the pandemic, when classes in all levels for public and private schools were suspended due to Covid-19 pandemic, he initiated offering free tutorial in Mathematics to students from various barangays of the city.

Despite his physical and medical challenges, he continues to teach near and far and share to students and mentors alike strategies of learning Mathematics with fun.

“Over the course of his teaching, he developed methods and strategies of teaching Mathematics through games to make the learning experience fun. He wrote a book, “Let’s Play Math,” which made use of games and strategies for competitive learning endeavors as media for teaching Mathematics. These games included polynomial races, geometric bingos, and educational Mathematics cards. In sharing these among students from Baguio and in other places, it was proven that learning Mathematics can really be fun with the right innovations and strategies.”

Togana is a Mathematics teacher at Joaquin Smith National High School with teaching experiences for 32 years in public and private schools.

Another commendation, through Resolution 289, s. 2022, is bestowed to Frank Lloyd P. De Guzman of the Schools Division of Baguio for being recognized as Most Outstanding Teacher-Broadcaster for Physical Education for Deped TV during the Department of Education Edtech Awards 2022 last June 21 to 23 at Teachers’ Camp.

Included in the same commendation are the members of his team, namely Jonjon Bulaon – remote team director and Elijah Calara-director of photography, both from SDO-Baguio; Jeffrey Jay Bagasol –offline/master editor and John Dee Cayso – illustrator, both from Josefa Cariňo Elementary School; Christine Falag-ey – scriptwriter from San Carlos Heights ES; and Andy Villamor – director of photography and voice coach from Pines City NHS.

The DepEd Edtech Awards serves as platform to recognize teachers and division and regional offices that successfully implemented their best practices and innovative works in education technology, thus, providing quality education amidst the global pandemic.

De Guzman is born in Baguio and currently residing at New Site, Bakakeng barangay. With 10 years of experience as a public-school teacher at Baguio Central School, he has been reassigned as DepEd TV teacher-broadcaster under the EdTech or ICTS at DepEd central office.

Through Resolution 294, s. 2022, the city council has allowed the Team Malaya to organize a race event on July 30 in the city.

Among the notable events organized and conducted by the team are the Cordillera Series-Trail Run, Mountain Man-Ultra Trail-Mountain, and other marathons in various places in Luzon.

The event supports the call of the World Health Organization in preventing sedentary lifestyles which increase all causes of death, double the risk of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and increase the risk of cancer and high blood pressure, depression, and anxiety.

As to the proven benefits, running improves heart condition, boosts weight loss, and enhances emotional and psychological well-being.

In separate resolutions, the body concurred with the co-terminus reappointment made by Mayor Benjamin Magalong of Engr. Bonifacio dela Peña as city administrator II and Atty. Richard G. Dayag as city legal officer II.

Both enjoy the privilege of salary grade 26/1 with monthly compensation of P113,891.
