Baguio City is working on the full implementation of the Salt Iodization Project.
The city council is poised to approve the memorandum of agreement between the city government and the Baguio City Nutrition Multipurpose Cooperative (BCN-MPC) to maximize the potential of the project.
The MOA is being refined by the committee on laws, human rights, and justice chaired by Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda before adoption.
The MOA will grant the BCN-MPC permission to use the second floor of the City Health Services Office annex building for the operation of the salt iodization plant.
The plant was established in 1995 to address the high prevalence of iodine deficiency disorder in the city.
It had been operating in a makeshift structure inside the CHSO compound when its former location was demolished.
The MOA also capacitates the Bantay Asin Task Force, which was organized to implement the ordinance and the law in the management of the salt iodization project.
City Nutrition Officer and BCN-MPC vice chair Angelita Sabado during the May 30 session of the city council, iterated that the cooperative is in charge of the production of iodized salt while the task force monitors the implementation of the project.
The task force is composed of the city health officer, the sanitary engineer, the president of the Association of Punong Barangays and representatives from the Permits and Licensing Division under the City Mayor’s Office, Public Information Office, Department of Interior and Local Government, Baguio City Police Office, Department of Trade and Industry, and the city nutrition committee. – Nene Cadiog and Rainzee Bantiding
