The city council approved the development plans of the Baguio public market and Burnham Park.
The development plans submitted by the respective technical working groups earned the city council’s approval during its Oct. 14 session.
The city council however made some conditions.
Both development plans have to be presented to the public through a consultation and the inputs gathered during consultation shall be incorporated in the final draft and resubmitted to the council for confirmation.
For the market development plan, the council said the setback of the road along Magsaysay Avenue must be considered in the finalization of the plan for public safety, privacy, and environmental protection.
Both development plans were presented during the executive-legislative meeting on Sept. 30. Both plans were considered as long-term solutions to the current state of the public market and the Burnham Park.
By virtue of Resolution 193-2019, a technical working group was created to formulate a master redevelopment plan for the public market. The group consists of Mayor Benjamin Magalong as the chairperson and councilors Mylen Yaranon and Philian Weygan-Allan and architects Donna Tabangin of the Saint Louis University School of Engineering and Architecture and Homer Soriano of the City Buildings and Architecture Office as co-chairpersons.
“With the present state of the city public market, it deserves immediate positive remedies to make Baguio City worthy of its prestigious designation as a Summer Capital of the Philippines and as a Unesco creative city. Baguio City needs a developed, organized and sanitary public market which should be transformed to become the city’s largest tourist attraction,” the resolution reads.
For the Burnham plan, the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority will be furnished a copy of the resolution for its information and appropriate action. – Jordan G. Habbiling
