The Department of Education-Cordillera is working on creating modified sports programs for learners to keep them physically fit during the pandemic.
DepEd-CAR Director Estela Cariño said they are looking on how to implement physical education programs for the learners during their annual planning.
“In MAPEH, we are looking if we can implement it using Messenger or through Google, where students can access videos,” Cariño said.
She said they have been encouraging learners and parents to incorporate physical exercises even while at home.
“We cannot allow our students to be idle or forget their physical fitness activities,” she said.
With the cancellation of Palarong Pambansa 2021, various sports programs of DepEd such as the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet down to the local district meets were also scrapped.
Cariño said they are also looking at the barangay units if they will conduct sports, which is allowed by the Inter-Agency Task Force.
“If sports activities will be conducted in selected areas then that is what we will encourage them to do. If not, they can have it in their own houses,” she said.
Student athletes will continue with their training with their coaches, who will give instructions online.
Cariño said they are also waiting for further instruction from the DepEd central office on the guidelines in the conduct of sports activities for learners. She said if the Palarong Pambansa will be held in 2022 then local sports programs will resume by next year.
Former Education Support Services Division chief Agustin Gumuwang said coaches and athletes maintain their communications online.
He said the athletes are knowledgeable on the basic exercises that were taught to them by their coaches, as he cited the value of continued training so the students are ready when sports programs of DepEd resume. – Ofelia C. Empian
