Another woman will lead the University of the Philippines Baguio in the next three years.

Economics professor, Dr. Corazon L. Abansi, will head UP Baguio as the new chancellor from April 14 to April 13, 2024.

UP Baguio announced Abansi’s appointment in its Facebook account on March 30, stating she was the UP Board of Regents’ unanimous choice.

Abansi, currently UP Baguio’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, succeeds Dr. Raymundo Rovillos who served as chancellor from 2012 until April 13 this year.

She is the second woman to lead the institution next to Dr. Priscilla Supnet-Macansantos who served from 2002 to 2012.

In her summary of achievements and qualifications presented to the public as a nominee for the chancellorship, Abansi said her more than 10 years of leading mission-critical offices in UP Baguio honed her skills in negotiation, coordination, and supervision.

Prior to becoming the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs since 2015, Abansi was the Director of Students Affairs from 2012, and director of the Institute of Management from 2011 to 2012, among her other designations.

“The task is daunting, requiring utmost efficiency, attention to detail, long hours devoted to collegial process and loads of patience to ease gridlocks, all with the aim of crafting decisions following collegial and democratic processes,” she said.

She added she sees herself as a dynamic leader with significant managerial experience in higher education, a passionate teacher with sustained scholarship in multi-disciplinary research, and a devoted servant of the community.

“I bring a wealth of experience in consultative leadership, consensus-building anchored on policy and evidence, respect for colleagues, and openness to ideas.”

In her message posted at the UP Baguio Facebook account, Abansi said she was overwhelmed by the UP Board of Regents’ unanimous decision to appoint her as UP Baguio’s chancellor.

“The search process has taught me lessons that I bring with me as I take the helm of the chancellorship. We will build on the achievements of the current administration and at the same time chart new pathways forward for our beloved UP Baguio.”

Abansi earned a degree in Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics, major in Finance; Masters in Agricultural Economics, major in Marketing; and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, major in Natural Resource Economics all from UP Los Baños, and an M.A. in Economics, major in Environmental Economics from UP Diliman.

The other nominee for UP Baguio chancellorship was Atty. Ma. Georgina A. Alvarez, former senior vice president for legal corporate services of the Camp John Hay Development Corp. – Jane B. Cadalig
