The Covid-19 pandemic drastically changed the education system.
As a result, parents really need to be stricter and give their child more attention.
Based on the article “Child Development,” the role of a parent is to provide encouragement, support, and give access to activities that enable the child to master key developmental tasks. Because of this, parents of students in distance learning play a vital role in providing encouragement, support, and attention to their children.
Distance learning situates parents to be the teacher of their children. They are the first to explain, assess, and motivate their child to do well and be better throughout their journey as a student. Parents need to be more understanding and always check the welfare of their child because they are more prone to mental health issues.
Just like what happened in Anini-y, Antique, Mildred Datuin was found dead in their house because her son who is on the honor roll continuously smashed his parents because they did not allow him to go out because of his modules. A psychiatrist said he might have gone through depression because studies have shown that students who are on honor rolls are more prone and have a higher risk to depression.
This saddening story opened the eyes of parents to give their children the time and attention they need. Moreover, it also opened the eyes of educators to be more understanding to their students because students experience different things and sometimes lack the ability to handle every situation. Especially now that there is a pandemic, they have to consider a lot of factors aside from their modules. (JONES L. LAWIYAN)
