Local parbusters are still waiting for an official announcement if the annual Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament traditionally held at the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay will push through this year.
The world’s longest and biggest amateur golf tournament with players mostly coming from the Asia Pacific region is held every late November to mid-December.
Restrictions on tournaments in compliance to the policy of the National Inter-Agency Task Force left players guessing if the tournament will be held under the new normal.
Information has it that the Fil-Am executive committee have been holding meetings recently with concerned officials to lay the groundwork for the conduct of the annual sport event to assure stakeholders that participants will strictly follow all health protocols.
Several groups of players have signified their intention to join the annual golf event, which is expected to reduce the number of participants if given clearance by the national IATF to push through.
The past decades saw the participation of more than 1,000 players competing in the various divisions of the tournament held for two weeks.
Several local teams have been dominating the various divisions of the tournament the past years with Manila-based teams winning the premier Fil and Am championship flights.
Last year, local teams led by the Mountaineers Golf Team II stole the show from the premier championship flights when they earned impressive runs in the regular division of the 70th Fil-Am Invitational Golf Tournament.
Other local winning teams were the Baguio Country Club, CJH Golf Club, Team Rascals I, Greenwater Golfers, and Crown Legacy team.
CJH also defended its super seniors’ title with a total of 353 points during the four-day tournament with members led by former mayor Morris Domogan. – Harley F. Palangchao
