Two Philippine Military Academy graduating cadets from Tanudan, Kalinga and Pampanga are this year’s recipients of the Athletic Saber Awards.

First Class Cadets Jaevin Awingan Latugan of Tanudan and Lady Deane Sarmiento are the recipients of the Athletic Saber Awards in the male and female categories, respectively.

Latugan and Sarmiento, along with the 162 other members of PMA “Masaligan” Class of 2021 will graduate at Fort del Pilar, Baguio City on May 10. The two “Tarzan” awardees will join the Philippine Army.

The 23-year-old Latugan, who was a Criminology student at University of Cordilleras before he entered PMA, was the Delta Company finance officer and the Delta Company Athletic Officer.

He was a Dean’s Lister and a champion in wushu during the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League in 2019. He was also a member of the cadets’ athletics and boxing squads.

The 23-year-old Sarmiento, on the other hand, clinched the Athletic Saber Award for being number one in athletic-related activities, intramurals, and sports participation of the graduating class.

Sarmiento, who took up her undergraduate studies at the University of the Philippines Baguio, was the Brigade Athletic officer.

She was also the 3rd Battalion Plans and Programs and the Civil-Military Operations officer. She was also a member of several sports clubs, which includes wushu, Muay Thai, athletics, boxing, and judo.

Meanwhile, 1CL Joel Nisperos Bacani of the City of San Fernando, Pampanga is this year’s recipients of the Sports & Physical Development plaque for being number one in Physical Education courses.

Bacani was the Delta Company Athletic and the Brigade Athletic officer and a member of athletics, marathon, body building and power lifting squads. – Harley F. Palangchao
