In line with Baguio’s celebration of October as Elderly Month, a selection of our senior citizens “took over” the reins of the city government on Oct. 17 and top posts in various line agencies on Oct. 10 as part of the annual Senior Citizen Official For-A-Day program.

In today’s age of the Internet, social media and advances in technology, certain quarters would allege that the young especially the millennials and Gen Zs, most of whom are tech-savvy, would have an advantage over those considered to be belonging in the elderly ranks (60 years of age and older).

Of course, there are always exceptions, since we know of senior citizens who are knowledgeable in using high-tech gadgets and younger folk like this near-sighted Ibaloy writer (a few years shy of becoming part of the 20 percent discount club) who are still trying to fully grasp the intricacies of high-tech gadgets and digital applications.

Be that as it may, I have always been a staunch believer in the knowledge and wisdom one earns in years of experience which, obviously, most (maybe not all) of our senior citizens have acquired through decades of living and traversing this thing we call “life”.

We should never underestimate and forget that our elders have contributed greatly and will continue to do so for the betterment of society as long as they are able.

While our country needs the energy of the young and other advantages that youth provide, this should also be tempered by the experience and earned wisdom of those who are older. Agree?
