Benguet athletes have something to look forward to as P25 million has been allocated for the improvement of the Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet, Rep. Eric Yap of ACT-CIS partylist announced in his recent meeting with the mayors of the province.

He said funds will come from the Department of Public Works and Highways and will be implemented by 2021.

Yap said the budget would cover the completion of the multipurpose gymnasium which still has wooden bleachers, improvement of the flooring of the court, as well as lighting for the gym.

He said the sports oval rehabilitation will follow after the gym’s completion.

Yap said by that time, the capital town of La Trinidad might be ready with its accommodation facilities to cater to participants of the annual national games.

Yap said allotting a budget for the sports complex, which is home to various athletes competing in regional, national and international competitions, is his priority.

The Benguet Sports Complex is currently the training area for local athletes in various fields, but the lack of facilities still limits the athletes from fully using the facility, which is comprised of the oval track, oval field, lawn tennis court, and the multipurpose gymnasium.

Yap also appreciated local athletes who made it big in the international sports arena such as the mixed martial arts group, Team Lakay.

In his earlier visit with the team at its rented gym at Barangay Pico, Yap said he would talk with Gov. Melchor Diclas on the possibility of providing an area to build a gym as a training area for Team Lakay fighters and trainees.

He said his office would look for funding to build the gym, which could also become a tourist attraction in the province. He said this is to back the province’s world-class MMA athletes and would-be athletes to have an area where they could train for free. – Ofelia C. Empian
