Baguio City Jail-Male Dorm head J/Supt. Mary Ann Tresmanio said nine persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) detained at the facility graduated recently from a solar gasifier stove design training that started in January with a fellow PDL serving as mentor.
During flag-raising rites at City Hall last week where she reported on the BCJ-MD’s accomplishments, Tresmanio said the PDLs were able to create three gasifier stoves that use solar power instead of LPG or electricity thus saving on rising energy costs.
Tresmanio said 11 PDLs were originally part of the training but two were earlier released from detention before they were able to finish with the rest.
With 386 PDLs currently in detention, he said the BCJ-MD aims to conduct more trainings and produce stoves that will be sold and the proceeds will benefit PDLs and their families while they are still in detention.
The trainings will also provide PDLs the added benefit of having additional livelihood skills when they are released from detention, Tresmanio said.
However, she said the facility lacks funding to purchase the needed materials for the solar gasifier stove design training and is requesting the public for assistance.
Those interested to help can visit the BCJ-MD office located beside the Baguio City Police Office and across City Hall or call 309-5874 so they can be informed on what materials are needed. – Gaby B. Keith
