Dear Manang,
Does being a scrooge come with the genes? I have aunts who are plagued with this mindset of pennilessness when they are actually living comfortable lives compared to others. What is sad is the violent reaction even before they are asked to do anything for others. Recently, a nephew has asked for help and they asked why people went to them for help and why people think that they have all the money. They said that they could not help their nephew who had to be hospitalized because of pneumonia. Should we just stand by and wait for them to die at home?
Vina of Sixto Gaerlan Street, Baguio City

Dear Vina,
Being scrooges have their own merit. It keeps people away and stops the begging. They are lucky to have no beggars but also have no friends. Yes, it can run in the genes when they lived miserable lives when they were kids. The predicament that they lived in has not changed in their minds and this stops them from sharing anything. I doubt if you will be able to change them so all you can do is understand them. I have learned my lesson with such persons. Don’t break your heart over it.
Pray for them,

Dear Manang,
I have cramps often. I keep forgetting to ask the doctor about it. It happens in the afternoons and at night when I sleep. I should see the doctor, I know, but I don’t want to know what’s wrong with me. I am afraid to have tests because I don’t want to be pricked by needles. I am ashamed to ask my friend to accompany me to the doctor or the health center because I only have a meager pension to keep me alive. I am single and live with a younger sister and her family.
Eloisa of Liteng, Baguio City

Dear Eloisa,
A doctor, I am not and do not claim to be. I can only share my own pains and observations but do recommend that you go for a consultation as soon as possible. My only observation is that drinking water is the best and simplest remedy. Funny but a friend told me that she didn’t want to pee too often that’s why she didn’t drink a lot of water. This cost her the healthy function of her kidneys and is now on dialysis because she also kept her urinary tract infections to herself. The story I am sure is much longer. But this should warn you that cramps that are simply based on water intake if not taken seriously become crippling. Would you like me to go with you?
Please see your doctor,
