Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda wants to commemorate Dr. Margarita “Itang” Joven by proposing to name a portion of Perfecto Street as “Margarita Fernandez Drive.”
The portion stretches from the junction of Lake Drive to the Junction of Harrison Road under the footbridge.
The late Fernandez and her husband founded a vocational school named Centro Academy in 1945. From its humble beginnings, the school was later transformed to the Baguio Central University.
In 1979, she became BCU’s first president and through her leadership, it expanded its academic programs and infrastructure development.
Tabanda praised Fernandez for bringing honors to the City of Baguio through her local and international awards and for her being a champion of women’s welfare.
If approved, the City Engineering Office will install a street sign indicating the new name of the drive. The City Assessor’s Office, City Planning Office, and other concerned agencies will be furnished a copy of the ordinance for plotting in the official maps of Baguio City.
The proposed ordinance was referred to the committee on education, culture, creativity, and historical research for further study and recommendation. – Jordan G. Habbiling
