Eighteen patients benefitted from the surgical mission at the Conner District Hospital (CDH) in Apayao recently.
The CDH in partnership with the Philippine Association of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeons (PALES) and the Philippine College of Surgeons (PCS) successfully conducted surgical procedures to 18 patients during the mission with a live surgery of laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
CDH Health Education and Promotion Officer Jaybone Francisco Bauag said the activity led by PCS Vice President Vivencio Villaflor III with the surgical team of the CDH conducted the procedures for 16 laparoscopic cholecystectomy and one each for laparoscopic hernia surgery and appendectomy.
Patients are from Conner and nearby towns and provinces suffering from illness such as gallstone or complicated gallbladder diseases, hernia, thyroid, gastrointestinal/colorectal and other cancer.
Villaflor said the surgical mission is part of the pre-midyear convention activity of the PALES, and a regular activity of the PCS through its Committee on Surgery in the Underserved Regions and for Education which has been actively conducting surgical outreach activities in collaboration with various non-government organizations and local government units, particularly in the remote areas where the necessary surgical care is beyond reach.
Bauag said the CDH was selected for the activity due to the equipment and facility that can conduct such medical procedures such as the minimally invasive surgery unit with high end laparoscopic machine equipment.
This is the first time the hospital is a recipient of the surgical mission but he expressed hope that more surgical and medical missions will be conducted to serve and provide the needed services and quality health care to the people of Conner and nearby areas. – Redjie Melvic Cawis
