Selling of wet wipes that have iodopropynyl butylcarbamate, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, and parabens is now prohibited in Baguio.
These chemicals are said to alter hormones and cause dermatitis when it come in contact to sensitive skin such as those used on infants as baby wipes.
Penalties for business establishments that sell wet wipes containing toxic components are P1,000 fine on first offense for business establishment with permit; P1,000 fine and immediate closure for establishment without business permit; P3,000 fine and closure of business establishment until compliance on second offense; and P5,000 fine and non-renewal of business permit on third offense.
Brands that are banned in Baguio stores are Dong Bang, Dong Bang Yao Baby Tender, Family Treasure Baby Tender, Sky Fire, Giggley, and Super Soft Skin Care Towel.
The ordinance has tasked the City Health Services Office in coordination with the Public Order and Safety Division, the City Police Office, and the barangays to inspect retail outlets and to confiscate non-compliant products.
Businesses and individuals who voluntarily surrender non-compliant products to the CHSO will not be penalized.
The CHSO in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration and the City Environment and Parks Management Office will determine the appropriate and environment-friendly disposal of the surrendered products. – Rimaliza A. Opiña
