The Department of Science and Technology-Cordillera recorded 189 qualifiers from the region who are among the 9,776 nationwide qualifiers of the 2023 DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) Undergraduate Scholarship Programs announced on June 25.

The 189 incoming college freshmen secured slots in a thin 10.36 percent passing rate from the total of 1,825 examinees from the region who attempted their way into the scholarship grant last March 18 and 19.

This year’s pen-and-paper qualifying examination result prompted a 28.57 percent increase from last year’s 147 passers.

Out of the 189 qualifiers, 80 are from Baguio City; 58 are from Benguet; 22 are from Mountain Province; 16 are from Ifugao; six are from Kalinga; five are from Apayao; and two are from Abra. One hundred nine of them qualified for the Republic Act 7687 scholarship program, and 80 qualified under the Merit Scholarship Program.

The RA 7687 scholarship program grants aid to deserving and talented students whose families’ socio-economic status does not “exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators”.

On the other hand, the Merit Scholarship Program accommodates students who are ineligible for the earlier program but are considered to have “high aptitude in science and mathematics.”

Qualifiers to both programs will receive tuition assistance of up to P40,000 per academic year for those who will enrol in private higher education institutions (HEIs); P7,000 monthly stipend; P10,000 yearly learning materials and/or connectivity allowance; P1,000 PE/MS allowance; one economy-class round trip fare for those studying outside their home province; premium group health and accident insurance; P10,000 thesis allowance; and P1,000 graduation allowance.

Qualifiers are also advised to stay posted for the notice of award (NOA) which will be sent to their email address used in the application process. The NOA will contain instructions and details on the schedule of orientation wherein the qualifier and their parent/legal guardian must attend prior to signing the Scholarship Agreement.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program is still open. Submission of requirements is accepted until July 28, 2023, through the JLSS E-Scholarship Application System at https://www.science-scholarships.ph.

Regular second-year college students during the second semester of academic year 2022-2023 who are enrolled in DOST-SEI priority S&T courses are eligible for the JLSS Program.
