TABUK CITY, Kalinga – Forty-eight corn farmers from Barangay Balawag here completed the six-month season-long Farmer-Scientists Training Program (FTSP) in Corn-Based Production System for Sustainable Development Phase I.

City Agriculturist Nobleto Sagun said the farmers were taught about value formation, exposure to research and technology orientation on the most-suited corn farming technology in their area. This set of graduates will model their new farming technology for other corn farmers in a place they will adopt.

The FSTP under the Corn-Based Production System for Sustainable Development is provided by the Agricultural Training Institute of the Department of Agriculture, UP Los Baños and the local government.

This is an integrative three-phase agricultural research, development and extension methodology.

The second phase of the training is a follow-up on on-farm experimentation, technology verification and adoption, which takes place in the next cropping.

Grace Singayan, one of the graduates, admitted her yield in corn remarkably increased by applying the program this cropping.
