Team Lakay’s Jenelym Olsim said she hopes to execute more ground games in her upcoming bout against Bi Nguyen in the undercard of ONE: Battleground 3 at the Singapore Indoor Arena on Aug. 27.
The 24-year-old Olsim admitted fighting Nguyen is no walk in the park, being one of the top fighters in the women’s atomweight division for the past few years.
The 31-year-old Vietnamese-American fighter has squared off with some of the best in the promotion, winning in her last fight via split decision over Ritu Phogat last May.
“Bi is a tough fighter. She has a strong heart and I admire her for that. I have seen her fights and undoubtedly, she has the will power that I have to watch out for. But I believe with the training that we’ve had, I will have an answer for that,” Olsim said.
But Olsim, a Muaythai gold medalist in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, has vowed to display nothing but her best once she enters the ONE circle again, promising to deliver a slobber-knocker of a fight.
“Like in my last fight, the fans can all expect an action-filled match, maybe a more technical fighter. I don’t want to predict what the finish will be, but either way, I’m going there with all my heart and I’ll do everything just to get the win,” Olsim said.
Olsim arrived in ONE in style, wasting no time in announ-cing her entry in the women’s mixed martial arts.
She shocked the world when she submitted Brazilian opponent Maira Mazar in the third round to secure the upset victory last March.
That win earned her place in the ONE athlete rankings, jumping to top five among the contenders in the strawweight division.
“After my first fight in ONE Championship, I became more confident in my ground game,” Olsim said. – Harley F. Palangchao
