With the prestige Cordillera fighters are getting in the global stage when it comes to mixed martial arts, Benguet legislative caretaker Rep. Eric Go Yap of the Anti-Crime and Terrorism Community Involvement and Support party-list has committed to assist the fighters.
Yap, in his visit to the Team Lakay headquarters in La Trinidad, Benguet on Feb. 20, said he wanted the province to be known as the country’s MMA hub.
“Gusto ko pa na lalong sumikat itong Team Lakay at ito ang maging pride ng Benguet at kikilalanin ang Benguet na bahay ng mga mandirigma o ng mga matatapang na mixed martial artists,” Yap said.
The caretaker said he would talk to Gov. Melchor Diclas to discuss the possibility of providing an area where to build a gym as a training site for Team Lakay.
He said his office would then look for funding to build the gym, which could also become a tourist attraction in the province.
“We started with moral support, then slowly we will give physical support,” Yap said.
Earlier, Yap filed House Resolution 707 commending Joshua Pacio, Stephen Loman and Edward Folayang for their efforts in promoting the advancement of sports, particularly mixed martial arts, not only in the province but the entire country as well.
Yap lauded Team Lakay, which serves as an inspiration to the younger generation to be engaged in sports instead of vices.
Team Lakay chairman Mark Sangiao said he is thankful for the support given by the congressman to their team.
“What we are feeling now is unexplainable, na masayang-masaya kasi napakinggan din ang panalangin natin na magkaroon din tayo ng gym na world-class for training at makatulong sa mga atleta at sa mga kabataang susunod na magi-inspire na maging useful sila sa community,” Sangiao said. – Ofelia C.
