The local government of La Trinidad led the observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial at the municipal grounds on May 27.

Local officials led by Mayor Romeo Salda lit candles to remember the lives lost to AIDS and also to honor those who dedicated their lives helping people living with and affected by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and continue to mobilize the communities in solidarity.

Stakeholders from the government agencies, civil society organizations, and other groups also participated in the ceremony.

Salda presented the programs and activities of the local government unit to help enhance HIV/AIDS awareness and assured the LGU’s continued support to the campaign.

The candlelight ceremony was also joined by Ms. Transglobal Philippines 2022 2nd Runner-up Kyra Antonio who vowed to help in advocating HIV and AIDS awareness.

The Family Planning Organization of the Philippines Baguio-Benguet in partnership with the Municipal Health Services Office also conducted a free HIV screening and counseling to the public as part of the AIDS Candlelight Memorial.

They also provided other services and contraceptives and campaign materials on HIV/AIDS and responsible parenthood and reproductive health.

The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial, which for this year adopts the theme, “Keeping the light, honoring the right, radiating pride,” is an annual observance done every third Sunday of May to commemorate the lives lost due to AIDS, honor those who are dedicating their life to helping people living and affected by HIV, and to continue to mobilize the community in solidarity. – PIA Benguet
