Running enthusiasts are gearing up for virtual run events in Baguio from Nov. 14 to 22.

Set at the newly-launched trail route at Purok Arupong, Loakan Proper, the event will feature a three-hour challenge, one-lap challenge, and kiddie race.

Organizer Marites Bitbit said the event will be on a first come, first served basis to limit the number of participants as a safety protocol.

“The concept is to have them run on a specific route while observing safety prevention protocols,” said Bitbit, who leads the Virago Bike and Run Events.

Bitbit, a Southeast Asian Games cycling gold medalist and a 2009 Asian adventure racing champion, added the three-hour run will take place anytime from Nov. 14 to 22.

Using technology, participants will run through the trail route and will upload their best time through the running application Strava, a GPS cycling and running app that tracks movements.

“Participants can traverse the course as many times as they wish, but please try your best to upload one file for easier and faster recording and uploading,” she said.

The track is three kilometers long and the more rounds one makes, the better chances of winning the race.

The top 10 winners will be chosen in each category with prizes at stake.

“Of course, there will be prize money and medals to be given to the winners,” Bitbit said, adding a special award will be given to the runner with the best traditional attire.

Participants are advised to plan their nutrition and hydration strategy before heading out, wear proper running shoes and trail running clothes, and sign a waiver before joining the race.

Virtual races have become the alternative race for short and long-distance run competitions all over the world due to the cancellation of many traditional races as a safety precaution against the Covid-19 pandemic.
