Members of the Regional Sub-Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) recently convened for a planning workshop to formulate the Cordillera Regional SDG Catch-up plan.

The workshop involves assessing gaps on the implementation of the SDGs and identifying interventions to help the region realize targets and outcomes of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Expected output is the Regional SDG Catch-up plan using the “Every Policy is Connected (EPiC) Framework.”

The agenda, with 17 SDGs adopted by all United Nations members including the Philippines in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet.

The 17 SDGs are no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land; peace, justice, and strong institutions; and partnerships for the goals.

Their indicators have been integrated in the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028.

The identified challenges for the Cordillera that need faster action are on the sectors of poverty and inequality, economic development, education, development administration and good governance, and health.

National Economic Development Authority-Cordillera Director and RC-SDG chairperson Susan A. Sumbeling highlighted the significance of the participation of agencies in the planning.

“It is important to recognize that the achievement of the SDGs takes a multifaceted approach, encompassing diverse perspectives, expertise and resources, as we discuss and deliberate, I urge each of you to contribute your insights and innovative ideas. Through the collaborative effort, we can forge a realistic master plan tailored to our different units’ needs and context,” she said.

Upon its approval by the Regional Development Council, the plan will be implemented and used in crafting policies, programs, and activities of various line agencies and local government units. – Clienteast Van B. Totanes
