The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera honored the Atok Municipal Police Station (MPS) under the leadership of Maj. Gregorio Kiwalan with the Gawad Kalikasan Award during its recently concluded celebration of the DENR’s 35th anniversary on June 30 at the regional department’s multipurpose hall in Pacdal, Baguio City.

The award acknowledged the invaluable contribution of Kiwalan and members of the Atok MPS to environmental law enforcement and participation and dedication to environmental activities instrumental to community development and sustainable natural resources management.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau-CAR nominated Atok MPS as an awardee for their significant role and assistance to MGB-CAR and Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-Buguias in the apprehension of those transporting illegally obtained mineral ores in Atok.

On this note, MGB-CAR Director Fay W. Apil called upon all vehicle owners and drivers to be cautious about accepting cargoes with no proper documents/permits.

Section 53 of Republic Act 7942 or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995 states, “the absence of a permit shall be considered as prima facie evidence of illegal mining and shall be sufficient cause for the government to confiscate the ores or minerals being transported, the tools and equipment utilized, and the vehicle containing the same.” – Press release
