The recent Social Weather Station survey revealed that 96 percent of Filipinos are welcoming the New Year with hope. This may be a positive outlook in life but wishing without acting leads us nowhere.
There are idiosyncratic practices that Filipinos believe to bring wholesomeness during the New Year, like displaying round fruits to be prosperous, eating sticky food to keep family bond, consuming noodles to make life longer, and wearing clothes with polka dots to symbolize fortune.
Most of us have been relying on lucky charms with the hope of becoming rich and living longer. Unfortunately, we remain a desperate, poor, and struggling country.
The only thing that can save us from trouble is to do what is right, seek guidance from the Almighty, and thank Him for the wealth, good health, pleasant environment, better and the opportunity to live. — PERCIVAL B. ALIPIT, Baguio City
