In celebration of the Indigenous Peoples Month, the Ifugao State University (IFSU) will spearhead a capstone summit on indigenous peoples’ education (IPEd) from October to November with the theme, “Keeping traditions alive through development of learning resources.”

The activity will highlight the best practices, experiences, and innovations on the development of learning resources for basic and higher education.

Researches on IPEd will be also shared by universities from the Philippines and Taiwan. Presenters include teachers from public schools in Ifugao and educators from Taiwan who developed specialized and contextualized learning materials and research on indigenous knowledge, systems and practices (IKSP).

A series of activities with different panels will run from Oct. 20 to Nov. 10.

The summit will feature four series with 11 panels. Different panels will focus on developing contextualized learning materials for science, mathematics, language, and social sciences for elementary and high school.

The summit will be participated by indigenous knowledge holders, academic community, IK educators, and representatives of national line agencies.

The summit is an offshoot of the Center for Taiwan-Philippines Indigenous Knowledge, Local Knowledge and Sustainable Studies (CTPILS) Project entered into between IFSU and the National Chengchi University of Taiwan on May 2019.

Launched on July 2019 at IFSU, the university inked a memorandum of agreement with the Schools Division Office-Ifugao of the Department of Education and the Save Ifugao Terraces Movement to implement the Ifugao Indigenous Knowledge Educators Training Program.  The training program aims to capacitate public school teachers on Ifugao IKSP and in innovating learning resources.

Under CTPILS, the IFSU Indigenous Knowledge Educators Training Program is also implemented to train selected university faculty members on the Ifugao IKSP. The trainees are expected to develop instructional materials on IKSP for higher education.

The event will be conducted virtually.

The capstone is co-organized by the National Chengchi University of Taiwan, Schools Division Office-Ifugao of the Department of Education, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples-Ifugao.

The event is also a part of IFSU centennial celebration that will culminate this month. The university is committed to lead IP education and cultural conservation in the province and in the global community. – Jude C. Baggo
