LAGAWE, Ifugao – The virtue of honesty is said to be rarely possessed by people nowadays. But this Ifugao student is one of those who still possess such virtue.

The Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Ifugao recently commended Azarel Lex Cayong, a fourth year student at Ifugao State University-Lagawe Campus and resident of Poblacion, Hungduan.

Cayong found a pouch at the provincial plaza stage in Lagawe on Nov. 7, 2023, which he voluntarily turned over to the Lagawe Municipal Police Station. The pouch containing identification cards, an ATM card, and cash of more than P16,000, has been returned to its owner, Maricel Cuti.

In recognition of his honesty, the SP led by Vice Governor Glenn D. Prudenciano presented a plaque of commendation to Cayong on Jan. 9.

In an interview, Cayong said he did not hesitate to return the pouch because he firmly believes that it is the right thing to do.

“I did not hesitate na ibalik kasi alam ko ‘yung feeling na mawalan ng mga bagay na mahalaga sa ‘yo at naranasan ko rin ‘yun saka ‘di ko naman pagmamay-ari ‘yun kaya bilang isang anak ng Diyos eh dapat gawin ang nararapat,” Cayong said.

On the recognition given him, Cayong said he did not expect his simple act of honesty to get such attention. But he extended gratitude to the Lord and those who appreciated his action.

Recently, a teacher, Carmelyne Taguiling was also commended for her honesty after surrendering a sling bag she found containing P77,000 and a driver’s license, to Radyo Kiphodan. The bag was eventually returned to its owner. – Florida B. Robles
