The John Hay Management Corporation belied accounts that it is spearheading the closure of John Hay Elementary School – a community school in Barangay Scout Barrio.
In a press statement, the JHMC said it does not have the power to close schools, adding the lot on which JHES is located is owned by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority. As administrator of the property, JHMC said it has to protect and ensure that occupants of BCDA’s property have the legal personality, rights and interests in using said property.
JHMC said the notices it sent to JHES principal Daisy de San Andres is not about reclamation of the property but to be apprised of the school’s compliance on government regulation on the operation of schools.
JHMC said it also initiated and coordinated meetings with the Department of Education and other agencies to ensure continuous operation of the school.
“JHMC is concerned about the welfare of the schoolchildren, their parents, the teachers, and the community as a whole considering that the school should meet the requirements set by other government agencies for its operation. In fact, it was even JHMC who initiated and coordinated meetings by JHSEI with concerned agencies to help them comply with the various requirements that would enable them to continue with their operation.”
JHMC said being a responsible government-owned-and-controlled corporation, it must likewise comply with its mandate to ensure the preservation of government properties and keep up with the growing needs and demands of all its stakeholders.
JHES is set to end its operation by April. – Rimaliza A. Opiña
