The municipal council of La Trinidad, Benguet aims to continuously educate the public on its functions during its week-long celebration of the 4th Legislative Awareness Week on Dec. 7 to 14.
Vice Mayor Roderick Awingan said the activities during the annual celebration were geared towards public awareness on the process of local legislation.
Through the activity, the council will also encourage participation and cooperation from the community.
“It is the job of the sangguniang bayan; we listen to the public, we generate solutions, we incorporate that in the ordinances and resolutionsand later on, it would be implemented by the municipal mayor,” Awingan said.
He said it is important that the public knows the powers, duties and functions of the legislative branch as well as the differences in the function of the municipal council and the executive, which is the office of the mayor.
By knowing the functions of the offices, the public would know where to go with their concerns.
Part of the celebration include the stakeholder environmental assembly, tree caring activity, legal aid and lecture on the salient features of the katarungang pambarangay law and emphasis in mediation and arbitration techniques for barangay officials and barangay lupong tagapamayapa.
The celebration also included the weeklong display of the historical gallery at the Lednicky Hall, state of the municipal council address and kapihan, traffic summit, and capped by the gift giving for children with disabilities.
Awingan has also presented the accomplishments of the council stating that only La Trinidad is the only municipal board that passed its legislative agenda in the whole Cordillera.
The municipal board hasapproved over 200 resolutions and five ordinances. Also, it has passed eight codes including the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Code; Sustainable Environment and Management Code; Investment and Incentive Promotions Code; and the Sustainable Tourism Development Code, among others.
The celebration was based on Ordinance 4-2019, which institutionalizes the programs, projects and activities during the observance of the legislative awareness week, every first week of December. – Ofelia C. Empian
