TINGLAYAN, Kalinga – The Task Force Chumancil technical working group has started drafting the Chumancil comprehensive development plan.

Spearheaded by Tinglayan Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, the task force aims to develop Mt. Chumancil for eco-tourism purposes that would open alternative sources of livelihood for people in the municipality.

Gumilab said creation of new livelihood opportunities would eventually help address the long problem of marijuana cultivation in the area.

Based on reports, the illegal activity is a major source of income of some people.

Mt. Chumancil is the target of endless marijuana eradication operations by government troops.

The plan dubbed as “Game Changer” is eyed to reformat the Mt. Chumancil story and the life of tribe people here.

Adopting the whole-of-government approach, part of the planning is the conduct of consultations with tribal communities for inputs in the government move as provided under the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act.

The task force is composed of representatives from Office of the Congressman, Provincial Planning and Development Office, government agencies, law enforcement, local government and ethnic leaders. – Larry Lopez
