The construction of a new public market building for the municipality of Burgos, La Union has been completed last month and will soon be turned over to the local government unit by the Department of the Interior and Local Government.
Burgos is one of the towns in Region 1 where many residents trace their roots to the old Mountain Province.
The construction of the public market building is one of the 91 projects in 77 LGUs identified and endorsed by the DILG to the Department of Budget and Management.
The P10 million-worth new market facility was funded under the public market/farmers markets (bagsakan centers) and public cemeteries projects of 2019 DILG budget, which included P59.20M allocated for five public markets and two public cemeteries in seven LGUs in Region 1.
The fund was released directly to the Department of Public Works and Highways for its implementation.
In the memorandum of agreement signed between the DILG and DPWH, the DILG shall jointly conduct with the DPWH regular monitoring and inspection of the project until its 100 percent completion.
The MOA also stated that upon completion of the project, the DILG shall be responsible in facilitating the turnover of the completed project from DPWH to the recipient LGU, which shall in turn be responsible for its maintenance and repair cost.
The Burgos LGU is hopeful that the public market will help much in boosting the economy of the fifth-class municipality. – Sandy Calado
