LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The Police Regional Office-Cordillera reported that crime volume decreased from June to Nov. 15.

During the Regional Law Enforcement Coordinating Council virtual meeting held recently, the PRO-Cor reported 1,315 crime incidents from June 1 to Nov. 15 with 243 index crimes and 609 non-index crimes while 463 were recorded under the public safety index.

Compared to the same period last year, these translate to 18.73 percent decrease in crime incidents; 19.54 percent lower for index crimes; 19.87 percent lower for non-index cases, and 16.73 percent decrease under the public safety index.

Baguio City and Ifugao and Kalinga recorded a decrease in crime volume this year but Abra, Apayao, Benguet, and Mountain Province recorded slight increase.

Baguio City logged 500 crimes; Ifugao, 91; and Kalinga,154 cases or down by 33 percent, 21 percent, and 34 percent, respectively compared to the same period last year.

Index crimes involve crimes against persons while non-index crimes are violations of special laws such as illegal logging or local ordinances. 

Public safety index is a classification created under the new policy of the PNP to provide a separate and distinct accounting of vehicular incidents such as reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injuries, and damage to properties. 

For the non-index crimes, violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 had the most number of cases with 180, followed by violation of RA 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children with 62, violations of the anti-gambling law or RA 9287 had 57 and violation of RA 7610 or the Special Protection of Children Against Child Abuse, Exploitation and Discrimination Act with 54 cases.

Other cases filed include acts of lasciviousness with 26 cases, violation of the comprehensive firearms and ammunition law with 25, unjust vexation with 14, violation of Resistance and Disobedience to a Person in Authority with 13, and four cases of illegal logging.  

There were also 174 cases under the non-index crimes for violation of various laws such as alarm and scandal, Anti-fencing law, Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act of 2009, grave and light threats, malicious mischief, violation of small scale mining law, and  trespassing. – Redjie Melvic Cawis
